We can help you gain greater confidence in talking to groups and will give you practical tips on improving your spoken and written communication skills with people from different language and cultural backgrounds. We are supportive and patient, giving you examples of teaching techniques in action and will answer any questions you may have as they arise.

Our course will take you through the basics of planning and delivering effective language lessons. We will explore a range of teaching resources, from flash-cards and picture stories to newspaper articles and course books and show you how to use this variety of materials with learners from different levels, from beginner to advanced learners. Time is also allocated to ideas for teaching children and one to one teaching.

During the course you will do two sessions of peer teaching to demonstrate some of the teaching ideas and techniques you have picked up on the course. You will be given detailed and constructive written feedback from your tutor. On successful completion you will receive an accredited 20 hour TEFL certificate.

I thought the weekend would involve sitting in a class, listening to theory and taking notes in a very diligent tweed-and-leather-elbow-patch kind of way. How wrong could I be? I had a truly fantastic time, everyone got into the spirit of things and the teaching was engaging and fun. I really think it was one of those life changing events you hear people talk about and Im so glad Ive experienced one as well.
Mike, 31, senior marketing analyst, London.

The course is paper-based and course books are sent to you by post.

You will be sent four course books and two DVDs plus the New Headway Intermediate student course book. The books are written in a friendly and accessible style and will guide you through the steps to becoming a competent and confident teacher.

You will be assigned a personal tutor who will assess your work as you go and you can contact him/her at any time for feedback and advice.

There is no exam to sit, but your work is thoroughly assessed by two tutors, and supervised by an external examiner.

Using tried and tested lesson plans you will be equipped to confidently deliver effective lessons teaching the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

You will cover the basic principles of English language and grammar, but dont worry, you probably know more than you think. Youll learn lots of interesting and fun ways of teaching it too. You will discover how English can be taught without using your students first language.

There is no practical teaching element to this course but you are required to complete six hours of English teaching observation and to complete some tasks and assignments based on your observations. This can be arranged at your local language school and we will send you letters of introduction to get you started.
