Becoming a Sports Teacher

Any sport activity would require specialised training classes in order for an athlete to develop skills and talent that should become effective in any event. Initially, you should apply for a certificate program and register for some teacher credential courses. If you are aiming to become a coach or sports teacher, you are required to submit a number of health and science courses. You can work as a walk-on coach while finishing the credential is also good if you can first take the required science, emergency first aid and health classes. Since there is a decline in science teachers, you may work with an emergency teaching credential for the meantime. You should also get practical sports experience and personal training experience. So even if you have never participated in high school or intramural sports, you can still volunteer to coach for community or high school teams.

It would also be great if you can ask to follow a sports doctor or trainer during a season to familiarise with the injuries and the things to look forward to in recognising injuries needing medical attention. Search for coaching and sports teaching resources in the area of speciality through print or online means. It can help if you can ask a veteran sports teacher to recommend you reading materials in the subject area. Visit college libraries as they can offer print journals or provide access to databases that allow students to read articles on the Internet.
